Connoisseurs of everything post, math and noise-rock, prepare to have your ears confused, delighted and ultimately blown off, as over 70 bands hit ArcTanGent Festival from 16th-18th August.
The festival opens with ArcTanGent old hands And So I Watch You From Afar who will have your jaw on the floor and your ears ringing for days as they perform their acclaimed 2017 album The Endless Shimmering. Having recently released their first album for 15 years, post-hardcore giants Glassjaw promise an intense set as they head up the bill on Friday night, while the weekend closes with a UK exclusive appearance from minimalist noise-rock trio Shellac.
If you’re a fan of Black Sabbath, don’t miss the cacophony of stoner rock that is Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (yes, that’s 7 pigs). Math-rock reaches new levels in guitar/drum duo GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES! who consistently deliver music that’s as fun as it is utterly unique. ArcTanGent wouldn’t be complete without at least one polymath, so for an incredibly uplifting blend of jazz and prog, Australian one-man band Plini is a must.
Set just outside Bristol, if it’s local acts you’re after, you’ll find plenty. With some seriously experimental electronic hooks and an unflinching live show, SCALPING are well worth a watch. And for a highly accomplished folk/post-rock mash-up, make sure to catch one of my new favourites, The Big Massive Orchestra.
Four stages, the best silent disco around, and a line-up fit for the true muso – what more could you want?
