St. Paul’s Carnival will feel like lightyears away when Astral Festival (formerly Bristol Psych Fest) descends upon Nelson St, conjuring a heady brew of mind-melting psychedelia, stoner doom and electronic experiments on Saturday 6th July. Across Rough Trade, The Lanes, and SWX, Bristol label and Astral organiser Stolen Body Records looks set to deliver another day of unmissable madness!
The line-up boasts an impressive showcase of international big names and homegrown acts. London-Japanese garage rock wizards Bo Ningen have turned heads with their electrifying, acid-soaked punk and roll, while Sonic Youth frontman and all round noise rock legend Thurston Moore will surely set SWX alight with his uncompromising yet stirring rock and roll interpretations. Riding high from mainstream embrace and new single ‘Hot Motion’, Temples sunny neo-psychedelia will be a soaring groove of celestial pop.
Bristol has strong representation on the bill, Astral founder and head honcho Al Struder’s heavy prog outfit Yo No Se with sonic provocateurs EP/64 bringing an ephemeral, white hot flame of Avon terror to the proceedings. Rest assured, dark clouds of drone and menace will rumble thrillingly from midland alchemists The Cult of Dom Keller amid reverb drenched indie swagger courtesy of Lynchian Californians L.A. Witch.
At £45, and with early bird tickets still on sale directly at the Rough Trade store, you’d be mad to pass up the full kaleidoscope of psych-rock on offer at such a steal. Feed your head this July, you won’t regret it.
