In light of recent Black Lives Matter protests across the country following the death of George Floyd in the US last month, Bath-based artist and poet Joshua Luke Smith has spoken up in a viral performance of ‘Check Your Blind Spot’.
Like many of us since George Floyd’s murder and Blackout Tuesday last week, Joshua took a step back in the realisation of some home truths which he hadn’t addressed to himself before.
In this live poem performance ‘Check Your Blind Spot’, he calls on fellow white people on white people to check their blind spots of ignorance and privilege when it comes to racism.
“I wrote this poem in an effort to wake others to the reality of systemic racism and historic prejudice that plays a much bigger role in our lives then we realise. Racism is real. It’s here and now and if we don’t acknowledge our ignorance and privilege, we do nothing to make it go away”
To accompany the poem, Joshua has set up this webpage which aims to support fellow activists and those working on the front line in the fight against racism: www.CheckYourBlindSpot.co.uk.
